You’ve just received an email from a friend/colleague wanting to share/collaborate on a onenote notebook. It’s a great idea and great way to work but if you don’t have an / / email address, how do you get it to work?

Read this post to help you setup a Microsoft account from your existing email address and then access a shared OneNote notebook.

In the email that you received inviting you to access a shared notebook, click on box that reads “View in OneDrive”.

A browser window will open taking you to the notebook.

Notice that in the top right hand corner, there is a small coloured box telling you that at the moment you can only view the note and not change/add anything.

So how do you update the contents of the notebook? Here’s how…

1. Click on the link “Edit in Browser”.

2. Because your email address does not correspond to a Microsoft account, you will be taken to this page.

3. Now click on the text “Create one!”

4. This will take you to the “Create an account” page that looks like this.

5. Enter as much information as possible in all the fields. For the “User name” field, remember to use the SAME email address that received the link for the OneNote notebook. Also, use a different password for this account.

6. When you are happy with all the details entered, click on the “Create account” button.

7. You will then see a message telling you that a verification email has been sent to your email address.

8. Go back to your email account and open the verification email. It will look something like this.

9. Click on the blue box that contains the text “Verify {youremailaddress}”.

10. A browser window will open telling you that the new Microsoft account is ready to use.

11. Click on the “OK” button.

12. Once you have clicked on the “OK” button, you will be taken to the OneNote notebook and you will now be able to add/change the content of the notebook as you require.
