When writing a document in Microsoft Word, it can be useful to include links to websites as part of a word or sentence but it isn’t immediately obvious how to do this. In this post, we’ll show you how to add a web link to some text in Microsoft Word.

Adding a Web Link in Word Online

If you are working on a Word document in the online version of Word (Word in a browser), highlight the text that you want to use for the link and then click on the “Insert” menu option.

The sub-menu will change and display all the available options for the Insert menu. In this sub-menu, click on the “Link” icon.

The link window will open. In this window, the highlighted text from the document will be displayed in the first field.

In the second field, type in the web page URL that you want the new link to use.

With this entered, click on the “Insert” button.

The window will close and the highlighted text will now be a different colour and underlined to indicate that it contains a clickable link.

If you hover your mouse over the text, press the ctrl key and click the text at the same time, the link will be opened in a browser.

Adding a Web Link in Word on Windows Desktop

If you are working on a Word document in the desktop version of Word, highlight the text that you want to use for the link and then click on the “Insert” menu option.

The Word ribbon will change and display all the available options for the Insert menu. In the ribbon, click on the “Link” icon.

Click on the “Existing File or Web Page” button and in the “Address” field, type in the web page URL that you want the new link to use.

With this entered, click on the “OK” button.

The window will close and the highlighted text will now be a different colour and underlined to indicate that it contains a clickable link.
